    Esme’s Top Games of 2011

    Esme's Top Games of 2011
Every year people meditate on all the video games, books, movies, and albums they’ve sampled, and then compile top number lists to put their favorites in a hierarchy. I’m not usually one for fads, but this process does actually allow us to reflect on the great works of art we’ve had the privilege to experience this year.

    Or people just love lists.

The 2011 year has been generous to us gamers, and I’m here to say thank you.

    Review: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

I have a startling confession to make: I have never played a Halo game. It may be because secretly my family and friends are all Sony employees, or it may simply be that I did not have the means to play it back in the day. For a while I even disliked the Halo games just because they were popular (I was a hipster and I didn’t even know it). With those foolish thoughts behind me, I decided I wanted to experience what I was missing out on instead of jumping on the bandwagon. Then I learned that Halo: Combat Evolved was made for the original Xbox and PC. I’m the type of gamer that likes to start a series from the beginning, and I’m also a gamer that can’t afford a good PC gaming rig, so I was torn. Until now.

343 Industries and Microsoft bring us Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary to honor the fans for ten years of dedication. This is also their chance to get people like me, who have never played as Master Chief, to see how it all began. I’m happy to be catered to.

This is a review through the eyes of a Halo newbie. Be gentle.

    Review: Dance Central 2

It’s that time of the year where we’re saturated with great games for the next couple of months, and we couldn’t be happier (although the same can’t be said for our wallets). As we’re still gliding around Arkham City, this Tuesday we’ll also be called to the front lines.

I on the other hand received another call, a call to show my moves on the dance floor, and I’m happy I answered.

SG Review: Resident Evil: Code Veronica X HD

I can honestly assert that I like the Resident Evil series. Yet, I’ve only played the fifth game, which everyone else didn’t seem to like very much. That’s why I can also state that I’m a fan of re-releases, because there are some gamers out there, such as myself, who didn’t get to enjoy the classics at the time they were original published. My parents tried their best to subdue my gaming habit back in the day, but now they can’t control me! I’m such a rebel! A rebel reviewing Code Veronica X HD.

SG Review: Valve Presents: The Sacrifice

I’m not much of a comic book nerd. Although I love mangas, as well as the heroes we now have from American comic books, I don’t delve into them as much as I should. Yet give it to Valve to convince me to read comics when they make them. Valve Presents: The Sacrifice, And Other Steam-Powered Stories is a collection of the comics Valve has produced throughout the years regarding some of their most successful franchises. Dark Horse Comics is bundling the greats into one neat package, and rest assured this is one volume that’s definitely worth the price if you’re a Valve fan.

    SG Review: BloodRayne: Betrayal

The BloodRayne series doesn’t seem to have the best reputation. The BloodRayne movies aren’t exactly masterpieces, and the games themselves have proven mediocre at best. I love the concept of Rayne’s character since she’s essentially the female version of Blade, yet for a long while she was just reduced to sexuality and… sexuality. So when I first heard of another BloodRayne game, I was severely skeptical. Then WayForward let me see what BloodRayne: Betrayal was all about, and it turns out the series may still have a chance after all!

SG PAX Prime 2011: Final Fantasy XIII-2

If you ever listened to the Pink show, you already know my disdain for the last Final Fantasy game (if you didn’t listen to our podcast, you’re dead to me). It didn’t have the same feel I’ve come to know and love from the series, and despite its visual beauty, I was bored with every battle and cutscene I encountered.

One day I will finish the game in its entirety.  Every time I look in its general direction, it just feels like it’s taunting me. So given those feelings, I was skeptical about FFXIII-2, but it looks like I don’t need to worry! Square Enix is listening to their fans!

SG PAX Prime 2011: Rise of Nightmares

I’ve covered Kinect games quite a few times already, so you can tell I’m trying to justify my purchase (that I got for free from the actual Burger King). Although I feel motion control games still have some growing to do before they become as immersive and fun as Microsoft’s marketing says it is, I’m willing to try out what’s out there on the market.

At E3 I wasn’t able to play Rise of Nightmares because I was too busy getting trampled by everyone else (honestly, I need 6 inch heels to have you all notice me), so this was my chance to see what the game was like. Needless to say, I’m worried.
